How Water Loads a Wall in Chicago Clay
A retaining wall holds back soil. Once that soil is saturated, the wall is also holding back the water in it, and water pushes in every direction at once. Fixr states the mechanism plainly: drainage is essential because water usually cannot pass through the wall, and without it, pressure builds in the soil behind and makes the wall more likely to break or crack.
Why clay makes it worse
Soil is sand, silt and clay in some ratio, and the ratio decides how fast water leaves. University of Illinois Extension puts it directly: soils that are primarily sand have more pore space and drain quickly, while clay soils have less pore space, which slows water movement through the profile and holds water for extended periods. Extension also notes that compaction, from construction equipment or even repeated foot traffic, compresses soil pores and further limits water movement. A yard that saw excavation and heavy equipment during a wall build is compacted ground by definition.
The test you can run on your own soil
Illinois Extension describes a percolation test any homeowner can run: dig a hole at least 12 inches deep and 4 to 12 inches wide, fill it and let it drain completely to saturate the surrounding soil, then refill it and measure the drop after 15 minutes. Multiply that drop by four for the hourly rate. Extension calls 1 to 3 inches per hour desirable, and less than 1 inch per hour poorly drained. Frost Heave: What a Chicago Winter Does to the Bottom of the Wall
Water expands as it freezes. Inside the soil behind or beneath a wall, it lifts whatever sits in that frozen layer, then drops it again on the thaw. Repeat that through a Chicago winter and a wall that was level in November is not level in April.
The code sets the target. The 2019 Chicago Building Code, Section 1809.5, requires foundations and other permanent supports of buildings and structures to be protected from frost, the first listed method being to extend at least 42 inches below final grade. Section 1809.4 sets a minimum footing depth and width of 12 inches. Suburban village codes differ, so confirm the depth your village enforces before anyone digs.
Freeze-thaw also attacks the wall units themselves. Allan Block's product specification notes that dry-cast segmental units are susceptible to freeze-thaw degradation from de-icing salts and cold temperatures, a specific concern in northern states, and recommends raising compressive strength to 4,000 to 5,800 psi, reducing water absorption, and requiring a current freeze-thaw test report from the supplier in cold climates. On poured concrete, HomeAdvisor notes walls may need an extra $30 to $100 per linear foot for footings and pilings over four feet high or in freeze-thaw climates, specifically to prevent cracking.

The drain pipe and where it ends
The pipe is the part most often installed and then defeated. Allan Block requires drain pipes to be properly installed and either vented to daylight or connected to an underground drainage system, with a grading plan that routes water away from the wall. A pipe that runs behind a wall and stops, or daylights into a low spot that fills with water, is a decoration. Vent it every 50 feet and put the outlet where the water will actually leave.
Filter fabric is not automatic on clay
This is where a lot of well-meant work goes wrong locally. Allan Block's specification states that vertical filter fabric is not suggested with cohesive soils, because clogging creates unacceptable hydrostatic pressures in soil-reinforced structures; where filtration is needed in cohesive soils it calls for a three-dimensional filtration system of clean sand or filtration aggregate instead. Horizontal fabric belongs above the wall rock column, to stop soil from migrating down into the stone. Chicago-area clay is a cohesive soil, so wrapping the back of the drainage stone in fabric can produce exactly the pressure the drainage was meant to relieve.

Base Depth, Embedment and Geogrid
Everything above the base is only as good as the base. Allan Block's residential rule is a base trench 24 inches wide, dug 6 inches deep plus an inch for every foot of wall height to account for buried block, with at least 6 inches of compacted wall rock in it. The manual is blunt about local conditions: if the foundation soils at the bottom of the trench are heavy clay or wet soils, or the area was previously excavated, that material must be removed and replaced with granular material compacted in lifts of 8 inches or less. The commercial specification calls for foundation soil compacted to a minimum of 95% Standard Proctor before the base goes in.
Taller walls, and walls with a slope or load above them, need reinforcement rather than mass. Geogrid is a synthetic mesh laid horizontally into the backfill so the soil behind the wall becomes a reinforced block instead of loose fill pushing on a face. Allan Block places it on top of a course, extended back over compacted backfill per the approved plan, typically every other course, pulled taut and staked, with a firm instruction never to drive or compact directly on the grid. For walls taller than 6 feet it sends you to the commercial manual, which is another way of saying those walls get engineered.

How to Tell a Wall Was Built Without Drainage
You cannot see the back of a wall, but one built without drainage tells on itself.
- No outlet anywhere along the base. Walk the low end of the wall. If there is no pipe end, no weep hole and no gravel visible at the toe, water has no designed exit.
- Water or white residue on the face. Efflorescence is salt carried through the wall by water that then evaporated, which means water chose the wall as its route out.
- The wall stays wet or dark long after rain. A drained wall sheds water within hours; a saturated one holds it for days.
- A bulge in the middle with straight ends. Pressure is concentrated at one point, usually because water pools behind that section.
- Soil sinking or a trough forming along the top. Fines are migrating out through the wall, which means no filtration layer is separating soil from stone.
- Angi's unsalvageable list. Shallow footings, lack of weep holes, significant leaning and wide cracks are the four signs Angi names as a wall no longer worth saving.

Maintenance That Keeps a Wall Standing
A drained wall is a low-maintenance wall, not a no-maintenance one. Fixr recommends checking the drainage pipe and clearing debris every three months, more often in winter when ice and snow can block the outlet.
